ANSI/SPRI ES-1 Certification for Roofing Systems

ANSI/SPRI ES-1 Certification for Roofing Systems

What is ANSI/SPRI ES-1 Compliance?

When installing roofs, there are standards and regulations that contractors and companies must follow to ensure safety and compliance. The International Building Code ANSI/SPRI ES-1 is the standard of the metal edge securement of a roof based on wind loads and wind uplift pressure that it can withstand. Metal perimeter edge securement must adhere to this standard. Making sure that the roof is in compliance with the ANSI/SPRI ES-1 standard is critical for building safety, especially if there are intense storms or high winds. This standard refers to low-slope roofs with built-up roofs, modified bitumen, and single-ply roofing installed.

The Code Background

The ANSI/SPRI ES-1 is a roofing standard created by industry organizations; the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Single Ply Roofing Industry (SPRI). In the 1990s, they researched and tested wind uplift and its impact on low-slope roofs and developed an industry standard from metal edge securement and roof edge systems. The requirements have been researched and updated throughout the years. The ES in the code stands for edge securement.

The Risks of Improper Edge Securement

Roof Failure – Uplifting edges due to high winds result in more than half of roof failures. Without proper edge securement, your roof could be at risk. The building code details specific design requirements for low-slope roofs. Making sure the roofing company you choose to install your business’ roof is in compliance with the appropriate building requirements can reduce your company’s risk and liability.

Waterproofing/ Leaking Issues – Waterproofing and leaking issues are also risks associated with improperly installed edges. When heavy rain occurs, water could find its way into the cracks and crevices if the metal edging is not secured.
