What Type of Single-Ply Do You Need for Your Roof

What Type of Single-Ply Do You Need for Your Roof

What is Single-Ply Roofing?

Single-ply is a lightweight, durable roofing system that is installed over the existing roof. Single-ply membranes have a long lifespan and are UV resistant and waterproof. All in all, this roofing system is a great choice when it comes to repairing your roof. There are four main application techniques used to install single-ply; ballasted, mechanically attached, fully adhered, and metal retrofit. The application will depend on the type of single-ply.

There are many different types of single-ply roofing membranes. The three most popular ones can be broken down into two groups; Thermoplastics and Thermosets. These roofing types react differently when heat is applied and are installed differently. Thermosets can withstand high temperatures without losing shape, while thermoplastics can be reshaped when heat is applied.

Thermoplastics

Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO)

TPO is a heat-weldable membrane that can help lower energy costs because of its UV-resistant properties. It usually has a white finish that reflects rays and, in turn, less AC is needed to keep occupants comfortable. It is made with flexible polymerized rubber which allows it to flex with the building as it settles or expands. TPO is resistant to chemicals, mold, and dirt, as well as, punctures. It can be installed by being fully adhered or mechanically attached.

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)

PVC, like TPO, is also heat-welded during installation. It is weather-resistant and made of two layers of PVC then reinforced with a layer of polyester or fiberglass. PVC can also help lower cooling and energy costs. It is a common roofing option for restaurants because it is resistant to fats and oil. PVC is installed by being fully adhered, mechanically attached, or ballasted.

Thermosets

Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM)

The most popular thermoset single-ply roofing system is EPDM. It is made of a synthetic rubber material that is versatile and durable. This single-ply roofing type is low maintenance and can last 40+ years. EPDM is installed by being fully adhered, mechanically attached, or ballasted.
